Gordon lawns across a frost-hollow year
A Gordon lawn spends more of the year asleep than most in Canberra. Cold air settles on this end of the valley from May, the couch and kikuyu turn straw-coloured, and while the city sees its last frost around mid-September the pond end of Gordon can be white into October, so the first spring feed and the first proper cut wait until the soil has genuinely warmed. When growth does start it starts hard, on the back of the wettest weeks of the year, and October to December is when we core the compacted family lawns, repair the worn tracks and settle into the fortnightly round. Summer splits the suburb: the alluvial south holds water and mows easily, while the tuff at the northern end needs deep soakings before 9 am within the daylight-saving rules and a higher cut through the north-westerlies. Autumn is the second flush, the right time to overseed or lay new turf on a section that has given up, with a potassium feed before the first hard frost returns in late April.
