Seasons on the Brindabella side
Paddys River country runs from river flats to foothills, and the seasons hit each differently. On the valley floors cold air pools, so frost comes early in May and can hang around into late September, well after the suburbs have warmed. Warm-season grass stays flat and brown until the soil finally gets past the mid-teens in October, then the spring rain peak sends everything up at once — grass, weeds and seed heads — which is why we want the fire-break cut done before the December heat cures it. Summer is dry, and the hot westerlies come straight over the Brindabellas onto exposed blocks, so house lawns get a higher cut and deep watering before 9 am within the ACT rules. In autumn a fertilising feed and lawn repairs or top dressing on the house lawn go in before the first hard frost.
