Lawn care on Richardson’s flat alluvial blocks
Fox Mowing ACT mows and gardens right across Richardson, the Tuggeranong suburb named after the novelist Henry Handel Richardson and laid out with streets named after writers, especially women. This is the Canberra Richardson, not to be confused with same-named places elsewhere in Australia. It was gazetted in 1975 and settled from 1981, sits at about 609 metres above sea level between Johnson Drive, Ashley Drive and Isabella Drive, and had 3,058 residents at the 2021 census. The local centre, Richardson Oval, the primary school and the preschool are all on May Gibbs Close, the scout hall is on Clift Crescent and the Tuggeranong Homestead heritage site is reached off Johnson Drive.
What makes Richardson different underfoot is that Quaternary alluvium covers the whole suburb: soil washed down from the volcanic hills in Chisholm and to the east. It is flat, it holds water after the spring rains and it sits in the coldest part of the valley, so lawns here frost harder and stay wet longer than those on the slopes a kilometre away.
