Village lawns and rural blocks in Hall
Fox Mowing ACT mows and gardens throughout Hall, the heritage village in postcode 2618 on the northern edge of the territory, just beyond the Gungahlin suburbs. Hall was surveyed in 1881, proclaimed in 1882 as Ginninderra and promptly renamed for Henry Hall, the district’s first landholder, with the first blocks sold in 1886. It was laid out on a rectangular grid on Halls Creek, and that grid is still the village: 298 people at the 2021 census, cottages such as Cooee, Glenowa, Winarlia and Ottocliffe from the first decade of the 1900s, St Francis Xavier’s church of 1910 on Victoria Street, the old school that ran from 1911 to 2006, and a Memorial Avenue of trees. Around it is open country, with the showground and pavilion, the equestrian park and polocrosse grounds, and rural blocks running out towards One Tree Hill.
That makes Hall two jobs at once. Inside the grid, village blocks with old gardens need a careful mow, sharp edges along the fences and hedges that have been growing for a lifetime kept in shape. Outside it, the work is acreage: paddock-sized grass, long gravel driveways, fence lines and shelter belts on the andesite and dacite country of the Halls Creek valley, around 633 metres up and open to the wind. Our operators bring a push mower for one and a ride-on or slasher for the other, and since Victoria Street stopped being the Barton Highway in 1980 the village is quiet enough that a regular round here feels like part of the place.
